SPLASHCOS Meetings

The SPLASHCOS Action involves a range of meetings and events which are required to progress the objectives of the Memorandum of Understanding. These include 6-montly meetings of the Management Committee, Working Group meetings, and ad hoc meetings for specific purposes. These meetings are often combined to ensure exchange of ideas and information and good inter-relations between the four Working Groups.

Additional SPLASHCOS events include seminars and conferences where the Action tasks can be taken forward. These events may be arranged by the Action or involve attendance and promotion at other key academic, industry or government events.

SPLASHCOS Final Conference, Szczecin. Under the Sea: Archaeology and Palaeolandscapes
23rd September 2013 to 27th September 2013

This was the final conference of the SPLASHCOS Action. It had two purposes: to review the work of the Action over the past four years since its inception in November 2009; and to act as a scientific meeting in the more conventional sense, open to all who are interested in the principal themes of the meeting. The meeting attracted over 140 participants, 65 oral presentations and 21 posters. Plenary sessions covered the following topics: Sea Level, Climate and Palaeoenvironment; Submerged Landscapes and Archaeology; Submerged Landscapes and Human Dispersal; Underwater Archaeological Sites; Survey Strategies, Techniques and Collaboration with Industry; and Management and Outreach.

Lunchtime Briefing in the European Parliament
23rd April 2013

Polish MEP Bogusław Liberadzki hosted a lunchtime briefing at the European Parliament on the ‘Science of Europe’s Underwater Cultural Heritage’ to promote the work of the SPLASHCOS Action and its forthcoming final conference at Szczecin in September. The SPLASHCOS Chair, Geoff Bailey, the Vice Chair, Dimitris Sakellariou, and Working Group 2 Chair, Jan Harff, took part in the meeting, and Geoff Bailey and SPLASHCOS early stage researchers Helen Farr, Aaron Micallef, and Nicolas Nowald gave presentations on different aspects of underwater research. The meeting was organized by the German Marine Research Consortium and Dr Jan-Stefan Fritz.

SPLASHCOS Esbjerg Meeting
14th March 2013 to 16th March 2013

This, the seventh major meeting of SPLASHCOS, comprised a two-day public workshop with the North Sea offshore industry, and a third day of meetings of the Working Groups and the Management Committee. The workshop - Offshore Industry and Archaeology: A Creative Relationship - was hosted jointly by the Maritime Archaeology Programme at the University of Southern Denmark and the Offshore Center Denmark, the organisation which promotes the interests of Danish offshore enterprises. This attracted a large audience and a wide representation from offshore industries and SMEs, including oil and gas, renewable energy, construction, aggregates and dredging,technology and consultancy.

SPLASHCOS Rome Meeting
26th September 2012 to 28th September 2012

The sixth meeting of SPLASHCOS took place at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza'. This was a three-day meeting, comprising a workshop on sea-level change with presentations by members and invited speakers on Day 1, meetings of the Working Groups and Management Committee on Day 2, and a field excursion on Day 3 to see shoreline features and archaeological sites on the Italian coast south of Rome.

SPLASHCOS Amersfoort Meeting
24th April 2012 to 25th April 2012

This meeting took place as a two-day discussion meeting focussed on research funding, progress with the WG1 and WG2 publications, progress reports on WG3 and WG4, and plans for events and meetings for the remainder of the Action.

SPLASHCOS UK Meeting
25th November 2011

The UK members of SPLASHCOS organised a day-meeting in Edinburgh on 25th November, 2011, to inform the wider UK community interested in submerged landscapes about the work of SPLASHCOS and to solicit ideas and further involvement.

SPLASHCOS Zadar Meeting, October 2011
3rd October 2011 to 4th October 2011

The fourth major SPLASHCOS meeting took place at the University of Zadar in Zadar, Croatia. The main event was a Management Committee meeting to review progress and future plans at the half-way stage of the Action. Working Group 1 and Working Group 2 also held parallel meetings with presentations and discussions to review progress with publications on the current state of archaeological and geoscientific knowledge. There was also a Deukalion Planning Group meeting to review research strategy, and an open discussion meeting on the final day.

Ahtopol Meeting, Bulgaria, May 2011
26th August 2011 to 30th August 2011

Members of SPLASHCOS took part in an international conference on 26–30 May on Archaeology and Predictive Modelling, with contributors from Europe and North America and specialists from a wide range of disciplines. The conference was held on the Black Sea coast at Ahtopol, and was organised by the Centre for Underwater Archaeology, Sozopol, under the direction of Hristina Angelova, in collaboration with other Bulgarian colleagues and institutions.

SPLASHCOS Berlin Meeting, April 2011
11th April 2011 to 12th April 2011

The third major meeting of SPLASHCOS took place in Berlin on the 11th and 12th of April. This meeting was dedicated to bringing together members of Working Group 1 and Working Group 2 to develop a better understanding between the archaeological and geoscientific approaches to submerged landscapes. The meeting also included separate sessions of Working Group 1 and Working Group 2, and meetings of the Early Stage Researcher Group, the Deukalion Planning Group and the Management Committee.

SPLASHCOS Rhodes Meeting, October 2010
4th October 2010 to 5th October 2010

The second meeting of the SPLASHCOS membership was held in Rhodes, Greece on the 4th and 5th October 2010. After a plenary session each of the four working groups held meetings during which work programs were developed. Further regional group discussions were held to stimulate cross-group working. The initial day of meetings was completed with presentations of work being undertaken in Greece. Further discussion was held on the second day with a Management Group meeting then forming the final session of the event.

SPLASHCOS York Meeting, March 2010
10th March 2010 to 11th March 2010

The first full meeting of the SPLASHCOS membership was held in March at the University of York, UK.

This occasion provided an opportunity to combine a meeting of the Management Committee with meetings of the Working Groups, a think-tank of Early Stage Researchers, and a plenary session in which members from each of the participating States and invited experts gave an overview of the current state of knowledge and issues relating to the submerged landscape in their region.

SPLASHCOS Brussels Meeting, November 2009
4th November 2009

This was the opening or kick-off meeting of the Action, and the business of the meeting was devoted to an explanation of the history, scope and rules of COST Actions, to the election of the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Financial Rapporteurs, and to a discussion of the budget for the coming year, the objectives and research tasks of the Action, the initial composition of the Working Groups, and possible venues for training.
